The day begins with the 2-hr ferry crossing to Kristiansand, where we first set foot (tyre) in Norway.
Leaving the port, we initially head east on the E18 towards Oslo. However, this is only for a few kilometres as we leave the outskirts of Kristiansand and cross the Topdalsfjord to reach Timenes. Here we leave the main road and turn north-east on RV41 through Birkeland, following the valleys to Hynnekleiv.
After a dog-leg of a couple of kilometres north-west on RV42, we are once again heading north-east on RV41 as we start to climb into the hills. Passing alongside Lake Nisser, we eventually reach the E134 at Brunkeberg, where we turn our backs on the rolling countryside and head north-west towards the mountains.
At Åmot, we leave the east-west trunk road and turn north towards Rjukan on RV37, continuing to climb towards the fells on the Hardanger plateau and our hotel for the night.
